Craigslist and housing...
So looking for a place to live stinks. It is also a talent that you develop with practice.
I was in DC last weekend looking for a place to live. My main resource was craigslist.com.
I went and saw about 10 places last weekend. You can really liken this to going on 10 blind dates in one weekend. You are checking out what they have. Does their place meet your needs? Could you live with them? They are checking out you. Do I want this guy living in my house?
I met all sorts of crazy people. I met really cool people like these two dook grads (I know, who would have thought?), and Knechtel's roommate's boyfriend, Dave. I met some not so cool people, like the girl who lectured me about how she took a while to finish college cause she was too busy war protesting, and like the guy who told me within 5 minutes of our meeting, "I don't date white girls anymore. I just like f@*&ing black bitches now." Oh yeah, this guy is about 5'4", and white...
I even found someone who had an apartment near where I want to be, with a big available room, and who was a cool guy. I talked to him for over an hour, and by the end, I told him that I liked his place, and that I'd probably take it were he to offer it to me. He said he wanted to meet with the other two ("unpromising") appointments he had already set up, and that he would get in touch with me Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
I've never been on a blind date, but I can't imagine this being much different. I found myself waiting by both the phone and computer, waiting to hear. I honestly felt kind of pathetic. It also brought back memories of the book, He's Not That Into You, or whatever it's called.
Well, in the end, I got dumped. OR at least he hasn't called. And it's not the end of the world. I am sure there are reasons. And I'm sure I'll find another place (I'm going back to DC early next week to look). But man, I'm glad I'm not in the blind dating world...
