Katrina

I haven't posted anything on Katrina because I just didn't know what to say about it. Well, I feel like we've all see plenty of commentary. All I really want to say is this:

If you are reading this, you are better off then pretty much everyone who has be effected by this storm. Please donate something to someone. Give something. If you can give $50 or $100, do so. But if $5 is all you can do, that's fine. But give something.

Thanks.

I have a (temp) Job

So I am now the part-time assistant to the director of the Governer Morehead School for the Blind, in Raleigh. I work 3 days a week for 8 hours per day.

Honestly, it's a bit boring, but when I have work to do, it's not too bad. At the very least, it's a paycheck and it keeps my busy until I can move to D.C.

Word.

Books and Movies

So I've read a bunch of books, and seen a few movies lately. If you want more specifics on any, let me know...

Books:

Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas - Tom Robbins

This book is written in the second person, you. You are a smart (book-smart), over-achieving, Asian girl who is trying to make it in the Financial world. In fact, you will often find yourself very annoyed by yourself. This is not a knock against the book, as any annoyance severs a point, in this story of how you fare through a market crash.

The Bonfire of the Vanities - Tom Wolfe

Slightly slow to start, but a story told from everyone's point of view that will have you switching sides regularly. It also didn't leave me the super-clean ending that I seem to crave, but still left satisfied.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon

Written as a journal/murder mystery from the perspective of a child with Aspergers, it gives a fascinating view into the mentally handicap mind.

The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini

Every American should make an effort to read books set in other areas of the world - especially Muslim areas. This story of a boy growing up in and then later returning to Afghanistan lets you experience that area of the world.

Movies:

The Aristocrats

There's an old joke that all comedians seem to know and love to tell, behind the screens. Watch 104 comedians (at least 3/4 of whom you may have heard of) talk about the joke and tell the joke. This is pretty much the most vulgar movie I've ever seen (it is rated NC-17, with no nudity or sex), so if you aren't into hearing gross things, it probably isn't for you.

The Incredibles

Another movie in the cartoon genre. Not on the level of Shrek or Monster's Inc., but still very entertaining and cute.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

The movie is action-packed, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are both very good actors (not to mention two of the most beautiful people on this planet). And while the movie is entertaining, it just doesn't live up to what it could have been.

The Stepford Wives

The Stepford Wives was rather slow throughout much of the movie. Still, there was plenty of potential for cool plot work that would have pulled this movie through in the end. I was sadly disappointed. In fact, several opportunities for cool plot twists were missed badly, and filled with stupid jokes. On top of that, there were glaring inconsistencies and parts that just didn't make sense.
