News: Politics, More Politics, Google, Hufu, and Men's LPGA?

If you've heard lots about the CIA leak, but still have no idea what's going on, this article (despite that its source) is a pretty good catch-me-up...

Harriet Miers withdraws from consideration for the Supreme Court. I'm going to miss the Daily Show's constant jokes about how qualified (or how not qualified) she is.

Trent Lott added, that President Bush should look across America to "nominate a strict constructionist, man, woman or minority". Man, women, or minority, eh Trent?

Google is at it again: Now a classified ad database. Google, the giant who everyone (myself included) can't help but love, continues to grow...

Every dreamed of being acannibale? Always wanted to try, but been worried about the stigma attached? Here's the answer: Hufu!

Male golfer Van de Velde will try out for an LPGA event...Pretty cool guy, eh? Honestly, I don't find this any stupider than a woman playing with the men.

Sportscenter: No more BASEBALL!

The end of baseball is upon us, and that means Sportscenter just got so much more interesting!

Here comes the prime of the college football and NFL seasons. And on the horizon, College basketball!

Root against the USA or for k? Ack!

Coach k was named head coach of the US national team that will represent the US in 2006 and then in 2008 in the Olympics.

And as sick as this makes me, I couldn't put it into words any better than Patrick Hruby. Some snips:

On one hand, we embrace the red, white and blue (and can't exactly root for France); on the other, we uniformly reject all things Blue Devils (helpful hint: AmEx cards will jam your paper shredder. Trust me on that one). As such, we're a bit torn. Granted, more reasonable fans might put aside petty abhorrence to unite behind a common cause, same as the U.S. and U.S.S.R. did in WWII. Up against Hitler? Stalin doesn't seem so mean.
Otherwise, we'll be no better than the legions of Duke fans who didn't actually go to school in Durham, or Notre Dame fans who haven't even visited South Bend. Like beef? Try Argentina. Fancy the Baltic Sea? Lithuania's your place. Full-blown expatriation may seem slightly drastic, but desperate times call for desperate measures. And really, if Coach K can learn to work the refs in Chinese, Duke detractors can learn a new language, too. Or just look north of the border for an easy way out.

Lou Holtz is a Joke, and Tommy Tuberville Knows It...

The BCS is a joke. Lou Holtz is a joke, and an embarrassment to ESPN and Gameday. And Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville knows it.
"ESPN has gotten so much power lately, it's kinda scary," Tuberville said. "And most of their analysts are coaches who haven't won any games. That's why they're there. I think you know who I'm talking about.

"And Lou Holtz gets on there and talks about what a team has to do win that game, and the guy couldn't beat anybody in our conference. These guys will come talk to you and look you straight in the eye and tell you something, then they'll get on the air and say something else."
I understand that Trev Alberts (who was never my favorite, but could analyze circles around Holtz) up and quit at the last moment, but his replacement, former Notre Dame (and SC, and NCSU) coach Lou Holtz is terrible. And it seems that everyone knows it. Or at least Tuberville does. And that makes him a new favorite of mine...

Anyway, there is a bit more to the article...check it out here.

Special thanks to Laura for telling me about this story...

More BCS to come...

Who is Byron Sanders?

The UNC basketball team faces an interesting predicament going into the 2005-2006 season, in that they lose their top seven scores from the national championship team last year. The incoming freshman class is a solid one, but no one is quite sure what to expect.

One player no one is expecting anything from is Byron Sanders. And why should we? Byron played significant minutes his freshman year, being thrust into a starting role once Sean May went down with the foot injury. He wasn't too impressive then, and he hasn't shown anything since...

But there is reason to believe that we may something different from Sanders this year. With a health may playing in front of him for his Sophomore and Junior years, we saw very little of Byron, as he played only 4.7 and 3.0 minutes per game, usually in garbage time. It is said that players improve the most between their freshman and sophomore years. But we never got a chance to see that from Byron. Just because he didn't improve to the point where he would steal minutes from Sean May, doesn't mean he wasn't improving.

The fact is, we have no idea what Byron Sanders is capable of. He may have not changed at all. Or, maybe he has. We shall have to wait and find out. But the fact is that we have yet to see any of the players on this team play any significant minutes, and that just leaves a lot of question marks for the upcoming season. It should be interesting to watch players like David Noel, Byron Sanders, and Reyshawn Terry move from backups and bench warmers to starters, and hopefully to watch leaders emerge.

The Tar Heels are not going to be favorites to win anything this year...but it should still be a fun year to watch...

To quote Roy Williams, when asked what fans will find exciting about this team:
"Wow, I think it will hit them right between the eyes, 'Man, we don’t know any of these guys.' When you lose your top seven players… We’ve never lost our top three scorers in one year. So I think the major thing is how new everybody is. They’ll know David [Noel] and they’ll know Reyshawn [Terry]… But I don’t think they’ll know anything about anybody."
